One of the virtues for visitors to Washington is the dense concentration of tourist attractions on and around the National Mall, where most of the city's museums, monuments and famed public buildings are found. However, one of the city's curses is the paucity and expense of parking in that area. Staying at a hotel within walking distance of the National Mall is one way to make exploring the city's sights much more convenient.
Distances are misleading on the National Mall and the surrounding districts of Federal Triangle and Southwest Washington, due in large part to the huge size of public buildings and city blocks in this area. The north side of the National Mall has only four buildings on it but is roughly one mile long, so the visual cues for judging distance there might prove deceptive. Also, some city blocks in the area are gargantuan, such as the Ronald Reagan Building block, a rough square measuring about 1, 500 feet per side. If a hotel says it is only "a few blocks" from the National Mall, that could be as far as half a mile, so be certain about distances before booking.
Holiday Inn Capitol
The Holiday Inn Capitol is both one of the closest hotels to the National Mall, being about 200 yards from the back entrance of the National Air and Space Museum, and among the best bargains in the area. The rooms are appointed in a mid-range yet stylish fashion and come with modern amenities such as free Wi-Fi. Other features include four in-house eateries, a 24-hour gym and a roof-top swimming pool. For those driving into Washington and with a particular interest in exploring the National Mall, the hotel offers a package deal that includes a 50 percent discount on parking.
