As lifelong New Englanders with limited time for that "special getaway, " we expect only the best when it comes to staying at a unique and romantic New England hotel. After all, time is precious and it's essential to get your money's worth in these troubled economic times. That means we always look for a unique lodging destination with character and a great location. This is not an easy task, as we, and many of our friends, have been duped and deceived by slick advertisements and establishments simply resting on their laurels (or hardys). The following is a list of unique and romantic ocean and mountain hotels (leading to reviews) that we have found to be excellent in quality and places we always look forward to returning to:
Katahdin Inn, York Beach, Maine - Romantic 19th Century Victorian with stunning views of the ocean at Short Sands Beach.
Inn at Tanglewood Hall, York Harbor, Maine - A relaxing retreat off the beaten path. Stunning, secluded old home with beautiful rooms and outside gardens, and close to the ocean.
The Inn at Woodstock Hill, Woodstock, CT - Nestled in the "Quiet Corner" of Connecticut, the Inn at Woodstock Hill is a charming 1816 inn in an unspoiled region with big old homes, a classic village green and gentle rolling hills. This is a perfect lodging getaway.
Foxfire Inn and Italian Restaurant, Stowe, VT - What you would expect a quaint New England inn to look like. Also has a wonderful Italian restaurant!

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT - Generally regarded as one of America's great family resorts, Smugglers' Notch doesn't disappoint with its condo/village mountain setting and plenty of scenery, and recreational activites in the appealing, beautiful and mountainous Stowe/Jeffersonville region. It's also a wonderful romantic getaway, given the natural setting and inherent romantic feel of Vermont.
